Project Overview
Designing a user experience (UX) for social good involves creating digital interfaces and interactions that address societal issues and contribute to positive change. The process typically encompasses understanding user needs, identifying social problems, conducting research, and developing user-centered solutions. Let's explore the full story of designing a UX for social good.
The social problem of people facing difficulty cooking healthier food at home is a prevalent issue in many societies. Several factors contribute to this problem, including lack of knowledge about nutritious cooking, limited access to fresh and affordable ingredients, time constraints, and cultural influences that prioritize convenience and processed foods. Designing a user experience for social good to address this problem involves considering these challenges and providing practical solutions that promote healthier cooking habits.
The problem
Most working professional and students order food online which is expensive and unhealthy sometimes. The strategy team at Healthy Meal Guide have identified that people can cook healthy meals at home with some guidance.
The goal
Design an app that empowers users to cook healthier meals at home by providing guidance, recipes, and nutritional information.
Responsibilities
Conducting interviews, paper and digital wireframing, low and high-fidelity prototyping, conducting usability studies, accounting for accessibility, iterating on designs, determining information architecture, and responsive design.
User research
I used Healthy Meal Guide’s data on cooking healthier meals to develop interview questions, which were then used to conduct user interviews. Most interview participants reported feeling badly about not able to cook healthier meal at home. The feedback received through research made it very clear that users would be open and willing to work towards cooking healthier meal at home if they had access to an easy-to-use tool to help guide them.

Paper wireframes

Digital wireframes
I created the initial designs for the Healthy Meal Guide app. These designs focused on delivering personalized guidance to users to help cook healthy meal .

Low-fidelity prototype

Usability study: findings
I conducted usability study. Findings from the study helped guide the designs from the wireframes to mockups.
Findings
-
Users needed easy way to sign in .
-
Users want easy access to recipes that specifically use the food they already own.
-
Users needed to know the nutritional value of the food.
Mockups
Based on the insights from the usability study, I included the Sign in option . One of the changes I made was adding the nutritional info option using a simple “ view info + ” or “hide info - ” option. This allowed users to know more about the nutritional info of the meal they are about to cook.

Accessibility considerations
-
Used icons to help make navigation easier.
-
Avoided color combinations that could be hard to distinguish.
-
Initial focus of the home screen on personalized recommendations help define the primary task or action for the user.
